What is the effect of an edible versus smoking?
Edibles are cannabis-infused foods and range from chocolates to cannabis drinks to gummies. Some of the benefits of edibles include a measured dosage, longer effects compared to smoking or vaping (7 hours vs a few hours), and a thorough body high. For some patients, edibles are a good way to get cannabis benefits if smoking or vaping is not an option.
How much should I consume?
Check the amount of THC in your product. You may need to break up the edible accordingly so that you consume the recommended amounts. A micro-dose is 2mg of THC, and 5mg of THC is a standard dose. For those experienced with edibles, 10mg of THC is a starting point with pain relief and deep relaxation. If you do not want to get high, get an edible that is high in CBD and low in THC. No matter what the dose, you should not re-dose too quickly and appropriate dose for treatment or management of a medical condition should be determined by a doctor. You also might want to stay close to home for when taking edibles, and also eat a meal before you take an edible so that the active compounds are absorbed at a slower and steadier rate.
How long will it take for me to feel the effects?
When you inhale cannabis, onset of psychoactive and medicinal effects can occur within 15 minutes. Edibles, however, need much longer to take effect. You may need between 45 min to two hours before you notice onset of effects. It is recommended to wait until the AT LEAST two full hours after first trying an edible before increasing your dose. Resist the urge to have “one more bite” if you don’t feel anything before 2 hours. That can make the difference between an unpleasant or amazing experience.
Can I overdose from an edible?
It is impossible to fatally overdose on the herb, even when ingesting cannabis. The day after eating a high-dose cannabis edible, it is not uncommon to experience some fatigue, lethargy, headache, or simply feel like you are moving and thinking a little slower than normal. If you do experience too high of a dose, don't panic. The only thing you can do is wait it out. Drink water, relax, and stay away from driving, and know your tolerance the next time you consume edibles.
